Convertible Top Maintenance

September 11th, 2008

There’s been a lot of conversation going around of late about what to do about maintaining your convertible top. I love convertible’s. I had a couple of them, I also had a couple T top Mustang’s, a 84′ GT 350 and a 88′ GT I had alot of fun with both of them what great cars, the GT 350 I rebuilt the engine, all new exhaust, brakes, suspension, tires. The GT350 had those metric wheels on it so tire selection was very limited. But we were talking about maintenance on your convertible top.

My convertible had a white top , talk about keeping it clean, what a job! I lived in the city too. But I found that by washing it at least once a week helped a great deal. What I would do is wash the car, after washing the car I would scrub the top with a soft bristled brush and mild bar soap, rinse, and while it was still wet rub the bar soap in to the top and let dry so the soap would fill the pores of the top. Then the next time you washed it with the brush the dirt washed right out, then repeat. I didn’t like the harsh chemicals at the time and this worked. Chemicals today have be come less harsh and more top friendly.
For those of you with older tops, showing a little ware or a little sun bleached and dirty, try painting it. Automotive paint manufacturers make paint for tops to bring them back to life. When I painted my top I was always asked if I got a new top. It’s easy and inexpensive. Just make sure you mask it off properly , it’ll make your car look and feel like new.
